Brightened sunflowers

The 48,000 sunflowers planted in the middle of town here in Växjö, Sweden, will be harvested later this week for their seeds, but families continue to walk through the field of sunflowers, taking cuttings of the cheerful yellow flowers and just generally having a good time. The group of sunflowers in this picture caught the waning sunlight of early evening. The second picture has a wonderful symmetry, with one large dinner-plate sized sunflower ‘head’ catching, from behind, what’s left of the sunlight, the other head drooping in shadow. The shapes of the petals as they fade in bloom are so gently twisted, they’re beautiful in their slowly swirling demise.
