Old Friends, Seeking the Sun

These two gentlemen had more than their fair share of adversity to overcome today before they could simply sit and soak up the sun. First, they decided to move their bench out of the shade. Then, a large wind toppled over their bicycles, which I didn’t photograph, since I didn’t want to make them self-conscious. But their spirits were indomitable, and they kept at it until they were finally able to sit peacefully.

The final picture reminds me so much of Paul Simon’s song, “Old Friends”:

Old friends, old friends,
Sat on their park bench like bookends…

Can you imagine us years from today,
Sharing a park bench quietly
How terribly strange to be seventy

A joint effort, enjoying the sun
Not absolutely sure the bench is where they want it, and right before the wind knocks over their bicycles
Old friends, sitting like bookends
